The W. O. Carver Distinguished Service Award

The W. O. Carver Award Service Award recognizes and pays tribute to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cause of Baptist history. Recipients have exhibited rare and unusual dedication to the cause of Baptist history through writing, teaching, denominational service, archival and library development, historical center and society work on national and state levels, communicating Baptist heritage, and interpreting the history of Baptists.

*The Distinguished Service Award was presented by the Southern Baptist Historical  Commission from in 1982-1997, by the Southern Baptist Historical Society® in 1998-2000, and by the Baptist History and Heritage Society in 2001-present.

 

The Norman W. Cox Award for the Best Article Published in Baptist History and Heritage

Norman W. Cox served as the first executive secretary-treasurer of the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1951 to 1959. In his honor, the Historical Commission established the Norman W. Cox Award in April 1975. The endowment for the award was transferred to the Southern Baptist Historical Society® prior to the dissolution of the Historical Commission in June 1997. The purpose of the award is to encourage the writing of high-quality articles in Baptist history. Presented by the editor during the annual meeting of the Baptist History and Heritage Society, the award goes to the person judged to have written the best article published in Baptist History and Heritage in the preceding calendar year.

The Davis C. Woolley Award for Outstanding Achievement in Assessing and Preserving Baptist History

Davis C. Woolley served as the second executive secretary-treasurer of the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1959 to 1971. In his honor, the Historical Commission established the Davis C. Woolley Award in 1991. The purpose of the award is to encourage creativity and excellence in state Baptist history programs, including all organizations involved in assessing and preserving Baptist history.

Presented by the president of the Society during the annual meeting of the Baptist History and Heritage Society, the award is given to an individual or a state program that demonstrated great progress and achievements during the preceding calendar year.

The Carolyn Blevins Meritorious Service Award

The Carolyn Blevins Meritorious Service Award is presented by the Baptist History and Heritage Society during its annual meeting to an individual or organization considered to have provided commendable and exemplary service to the society and is an expression of the organization’s genuine appreciation for contributions made to the success of the society in its ministry and service. Any member of the society may recommend a person or organization to receive this special recognition.

 Call for Nominations

Nominations are accepted for the Distinguished Service Award and the Meritorious Service Award. Nominations should be sent by letter to the

Society office and should include the name and address of the nominee along with a name, address, and phone number of the nominator.  The letter should include a list of positions held by the nominee, biographical information about the nominee, and a brief description of the nominee’s achievements and contributions in the area of Baptist history. Nominations must be received by March 1.
