One of Georgia’s leading Baptist ladies, Sarah Brown Withers passed away November 18, 2013, at age 82. She is greatly missed by many.

Sarah Brown Withers was born in Atlanta, GA to the late Hugh Curtis and Florence Watson Brown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Harold B. Withers. Sarah was an active member of First Baptist Church Morrow where she taught Sunday School and served as the first female chair of deacons. She is a 1949 graduate of Brown High School, Atlanta and a 1952 graduate from Mercer University. Sarah earned a Masters Degree from Valdosta State University in 1976 and an Honorary Doctorate from Mercer University in 2002. She was a retired school teacher after 30+ years. Her family rises up and calls her blessed. Sarah is survived by her children: Joy Withers (Bob) Brown, Stockbridge, GA; Kay Withers (David) Cook, Waycross, GA; James David (Debbie) Withers, McDonough, GA; John Daniel (Susan) Withers, Fernandina Beach, FL; grandchildren: David R. (Marie) Cook, Jr, Michael (Megan) Cook, Sarah Brown (J.W. “Dub” Morris), Cole Withers, Jake Withers, Anna Withers, Allison Withers, Max Withers, Russell Withers; great-grandchildren: Lilly Cook, Ava Grace Cook, Addie Cook and Garrison Joyner.
David Cook, Sarah’s grandson and, like Sarah, a champion of traditional Baptist principles and supporter of the Baptist History and Heritage Society, gave the eulogy at Sarah’s funeral. To David and many other family members, Sarah was known as “Honey.”
