The Society exists to serve Baptists by providing creative resources and programs which will help them both appreciate Baptist history and do their history work well.  The Society is deeply committed to treating Baptist history with integrity and to raising its level of respectability.  The Society is freedom-driven, ethically honest, quality oriented, and attentive to historic Baptist values.

In order to advance the cause of Baptist history and to offer the best kinds of services and resources for the Baptist public, the Society adopted the following five-year, seven- part Long-range Plan on June 21, 2002:

1. That an advisory committee of financial and public relations consultants be formed to formulate a fund-raising strategy.

2. That the board of directors study a membership fee increase of up to 25 percent, consider establishing an institutional rate, and be authorized to implement the increases at an appropriate time.

3. That we enhance relationships with a representative cross-section of Baptists with an interest in our shared heritage by the following:
a. Convene a meeting of a small group of Baptist historical program leaders to discuss common interests and potential joint efforts.
b. Intentionally involve this representative cross-section of Baptists in annual meetings, market resources directly to them, enlist them as speakers and writers, seek their publications, enlist them as members, and invite them to join the Fellowship of Baptist Historians.
c. Hold two collaborative conferences/worships in cooperation with other Baptist entities.

4. That the Executive Director bring a proposal to the 2002 meeting for a booklet series.

5. That the BH&HS publish ten volumes per year through the Book Publishing Program.

6. That fund-raising efforts provide for the following:
a. Four full-time employees, including a secretary for the Executive Director
b. Twenty publications
c. $750,000 endowment by 2007 (the goal to endow the Executive Director's salary)
d. Ten $1000 Baptist history scholarships
e. Ten $300-500 student awards

7. That the Society membership reach 2007 by 2007.
