Formed in 1938 under the leadership of W.
O. Carver at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Southern Baptist
Historical Society®
functioned from 1951 to 1995 as an auxiliary of the Historical Commission of
the Southern Baptist Convention. When the SBC decided in 1995 to
eliminate the Commission, the Society became an independent organization.
In March 2001, the Southern Baptist Historical Society adopted a new name,
Baptist History and Heritage Society, in an attempt to reach out to all
Baptists. Today, the Society operates on its own. Self-governing and self-supporting, the Society raises its own money, chooses its own officers, and determines its own programs. It operates through its elected officers and staff according to its charter and bylaws. The Society intentionally relates to Baptists nationwide and even in other countries. The Society also has a Council of Advisors and an Editorial Board for its journal Baptist History and Heritage. In addition, it relates closely to leaders of state Baptist historical work. Society offices are located in the Baptist Building of the Tennessee Baptist Convention in Brentwood, Tennessee. This Convention graciously provides these facilities without charge to the Society. |
